Reader Opinon: Security in Movie Theaters

question mark1 218x300 Reader Opinon: Security in Movie Theaters

Before I get to the subject at hand, I want to take a moment to express my condolences, thoughts, and prayers to everyone who was directly affected by the movie theater shooting in Colorado.  My heart goes out to all of you.

Regardless of what your stance on gun related violence is, I think we can all agree that these situations are heartbreaking and tragic. However, I also think that these types of shootings cause people to overreact.  Now I don’t mean people in Colorado or people close to or directly involved with the shooting; I’m talking about people who watch it on the news and proceed to enter into “freak out” mode.

The best example I can give of this is my local movie theater, located in Warren, MI.  This past Saturday I went to go see The Amazing Spiderman in 3D and was floored to see tons of security; security that has NEVER been there before.  There were not only “rent-a-cop” security types there, but there were also “secret service” security types with suites and ear pieces.  The “rent-a-cops” were milling about and stationed outside of every Dark Night showing and the “secret service” were standing in the wide open area in front of the concession stands with their hands behind their back, trying to look uber important.

When I saw all this I took one look at my husband and said, “Are you kidding me?!?”  I don’t see the point.  Yes I get there is a small chance there might be a copycat, but it was almost as if they were BEGGING someone to try and get past them.  I actually felt more creeped out seeing them there, than if they didn’t have them at all.

I spoke to my Sister the next day, who had gone to see Dark Knight at a different movie theater (also a different chain) and she said they didn’t have any security there.  So apparently this wasn’t standard practice for all the movie theatres in our area.  Which leads me to my questions for all of you…

Do you think the security was overboard or necessary?  Would it make you feel safer or less safe, like it did me?  I’d really love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this.

As a side note, I’d like for this to not run off course and turn into a debate about gun laws and such.  Also, please be respectful of other’s opinions since this is such a touchy subject.

  1. I think increasing security at movies theaters is ridiculous. What happened is horrible, but overreacting and increasing security at movie theaters in general is…well…ridiculous. It seems to me that overreacting has become the american way, though.

  2. I’m going to blame the lawyers on this one! OK, the reason the movie theatre added the security, is because if that off chance a copy cat comes in, and they didn’t have extra security just days after the Colorado event, they would be sued to all get out, blah blah blah. In my opinion, lawyers cause a lot of this crap. I can bash lawyers, because I have 2 brothers who are lawyers, and my step-daughter is taking the Bar;)

    • LMAO! Yeah you’re probably right. The strangest thing was I went back and saw another movie at about Noon on Sunday and there wasn’t any security to be found. Apparently shootings only happen at night. ;)
